This urban fabric, hence, create a base for his encounters with people, who are also trying to connect to the city as he is. The horrific racist past of the country is still experienced by him and his brothers, which make them part of the same thread which then becomes their connection to the city. These walks on the streets of New York, takes him mentally in his Nigerian past which then leads to his travel to Brussels in search of his Oma.
During his stay in Brussels, he makes friends with a telephone shop receptionist, Faroque and his boss, both of them being immigrants. Through the story, I believe, the author has demonstrated the contrast and similarities between New York and Brussels, both being globalized cities as home for many immigrants. Although his search for his Oma remains unaccomplished, he returns back with experiences and friends that he will continue to cherish later. Through the stories intertwined with the city, one can read the character of the city.
This duality of the city takes turns through different stories and different streets. The story of Saidu, a Liberian caught in trying to illegally enter America or of Pierre, a shoe shiner from Haiti, manifest the city of dreams. This disconnect within the citizens of New York resurfaces when the author gets robbed and bitten up, while the entire city and the neighbourhood remain oblivious of the incident. When on a picnic in the Central Park, the author witnesses people landing in the park from parachutes and being arrested for their act, while getting the public applause for their bravery.
The city of New York, as the author mentions, is a palimpsest, written, erased and rewritten. The location where the World Trade Centre Towers stood, which once erased the past of the place, now lies empty to be rewritten. Similar is the case of Statue of Liberty, which once was a lighthouse and a symbol of a great nation, has now become a tourist attraction. The city is portrayed in different times and places, which shows the diversity of public places one can find in the city. Saito expires or when the author finds out secrets of his own past from his childhood friend.
These turns happen as randomly as the story ends unexpectedly. Your Comment:. Read Online Download. Great book, Open City pdf is enough to raise the goose bumps alone.
