Wow, the comments above differ greatly from what I've seen over the last few years during gun season in Uwharrie. Opening day is a bit of a shiz show but not dangerous in my experience. I've been there during the season before going to the shooting range and it's wall to wall. Good luck if you decide to hunt there. Make sure you do a bunch of cyberscouting before you go.
It's a lot of land to cover. CAP said:. Click to expand GSOHunter said:. You ever bow hunt after squirrel season starts? Larges groups that wander through and shoot anything that moves. Homebrewale Old Mossy Horns. CarolinaReaper said:. Homebrewale said:. How many hunters get their head blown off while hunting the Uwharrie annually? I'm sure you can dig up the facts. I believe we all know that was a figure of speach. I know it's a figure of speech but there are a bunch of people who elevate the dangers of hunting public land higher than it actually is.
I looked at the data once and there were more hunters shot on private land versus public land. I think many of them have never stepped on public land. Val Resnick said:. Could this be because so much more private land exists when compared to public lands? The probability is definitely in favor of the private land's incidents. So lets help this man out, where can he start looking for a place to hunt? No one has to give up any super classified deer information of course, god forbid.
This thread has go off course, some of you guys that hunt the area regular point this man in the right direction.
Dolfan21 Ten Pointer. Overall, my best advice would be to either: 1- if its a larger tract of land, go deep. If I were to start at one location, it would probably be the uwharrie river corridor. I hunted turkey there in the spring and saw alot more deer and sign there than I did in the area around Yates place. I havent hunted the Uwharries yet this year but I imagine its tough if you dont know the bedding areas given the abundance of oaks in the UNF and absolutely insane crop this year.
Dolfan21 said:. Cmon guys. Let's shoot the man straight. We all know there are zero deer on game lands. Read the topo maps and pick out some spots that are deep.
Acorn crop this year is an absolute hail storm. It sounds like the OP is coming from the east and I know there are several tracks that are part of Uwharrie gameland that are much further east than the main body. I saw a ton of sign but I went in without really scouting the location at the end of last year and didn't see any deer.
I would guess there are more hunters per square mile on public lands. So do you normalize the data by concentration of hunters or number of acres. Why are you scared? You can figure it either way you want.
You just stated that you seen the data of public vs private, nothing more, and that's a lop-sided judgement, unless, as you stated, one actually gets down to the specifics.
Since he is coming from the east, is the Uhwarrie any better than a number of game lands he passes as drives there? While you may consider it a lop-sided judgement, your own post states new hunters with little experience are filling public lands.
Also there are more hunters per square mile. Yet you are not seeing hospitals and morgues full of public land hunters. There are alot of rattlesnakes. My brother use to have 10 acres that backed up to the Uwharrie National Forest. He would kill one or 2 every month in the Summer.

Be aware of seasonal winds and thermals in choosing your hunting location. That stuff doesn't naturally occur in the woods. A boat also makes getting a dead deer out easier compared to dragging it through steep, hilly terrain.
I killed my best bow buck at Jordan a long way from the road or water at a. I definitely earned that deer. Also killed my lifetime best buck at Jordan in an out of the way area that got minimal pressure, which is also why he was there.
Get out there after the season is over, so you can see terrain changes, buck sign, and travel routes when they're in hunting season mode. It can pay dividends for you in the future and give you a great starting point for next season. There's deer there, you just need to work at getting them. Lucky Clucker said:. LR Six Pointer.
